Ok hitting a dog does no good, they jest learn to associate you with pain.
Do you have Sky?
If you do I REALLY recommend that you watch 'The Dog Whisperer' on Three By Cesar Milan and 6 O'Clock.
That will solve all of your problems.
To anyone else out there with any type of dog problem AT ALL. I really recommend you watch the show.
He is a miracle worker with dogs. You would really benefit from it.
All the best

In case you don't have time to watch a TV show...
NEVER hit your dog. Yelling doesn't do anything either. They don't understand english, so when you yell your dog is just going to look at you like you're an idiot making a lot of noise.
The first thing you need to do is catch your dog in the act. The very second you see her do it, go up and firmly say NO but just once. Put her outside immediately. Wait around and when you see her go to the bathroom outside PRAISE her, lots and LOTS of petting and even a couple treats.
Animals learn much better and faster from positive reinforcement, not pain. You want to have a bond with your pet, not have them scared of you. Don't punish her harshly when she goes inside, she has obviously learned from someone that it is ok. Just make sure you REALLY REWARD HER when you see her do it outside. Tell her what a good girl she is, pet her, scratch her ears, etc...
Crate her...now that she's developed a bad habit, you have to start from the beginning, just as if she was puppy, and you wanted to housetrain her. It will take longer, because she has a bad habit that needs to be replaced by a good habit...
Tie her to your belt loop...and don't let her out of your sight...when you see her sniffing around, get her outside. It works far faster catching them BEFORE they go, than after...but as sarahw says, if she pees and you catch her...still take her outside. When she does finally go outside, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE...even a little treat...will move the process along. When you're doing something that you can't watch her...back in the crate...(they do learn to love their crates, even if they protest in the beginning...don't give in!!!)
Having them tied to you will make ya think you might go crazy...but keep in mind it's only for a short time, and the payoff is immense...all worth it!!
