Try using a bulb syringe (those big ones they make for babies) you can find them in grocery stores, Walgreens, probably CVS, Walmart etc.
you use it to suction mucus fron the nose. Squeeze the bulb and put the tip in one nostril (not too far) and then let go of the bulb slowly (u will probably hear it coming up), don't do it for very long because it nakes it hard for baby to breathe. Take the syringe, put the tip into a tissue, toilet paper whatever and squeeze the bulb to get the goop out of the syringe. Then repeat in the other nostril.
Word of advice:: he will absolutely HATE IT!!! BUT IT HELPS!!!
If baby starts to breathing and is sucking in his ribs or he is turning blue call 911
IMMEDIATELY!!! Sucking in around his ribs means he is having trouble getting enough air and is in trouble
Good luck. A little vicks again won't hurt anything. Hope baby feels better soon. As a parent its scary when they are sick and so little. (;

I am an RN now, and milk is going to produce more mucus. Does your pediatricians office on-nurse triage or Dr to talk to!?
Call them for specific directions if you give him cough medicine---because dosage depends not only on age but weight as well. Or if you have a 24 hour pharmacy---
Walgreens. CVS, Rite-Aid--- call and ask for the pharmacist on duty. Tell them how old he is and what he weighs AND what medication you have to give.
Apple juice will also proceed to making the mucus thicker. At 5 mths, hmm ...not much else he can have, really nothing since your not supposed to start that stuff untill about 6 mth.
I would def call either your pediatrician or q pharmacist for recommendation.
A steamy bathroom may help loosen it up so that you can suction it out and help him breathe easier. Let me know what goe on. K? Love those little guys. Feel free to email me if you like.
