Hi,
Found this advice on the net for you:

Make sure the soil is dry before you re-water. Touch it -- if it is cool to the touch, the soil is still wet. But it should not be bone dry before you add water. When you do, it should drain out, and any water left in the underdish should soak up in the next 15 minutes. At that point, if the water is gone, water heavily again. Repeat until the plant is not sitting in water after 15 minutes.

Brown leaves are the most common symptom of watering troubles -- so I think you hit the nail on the head there. Spring is around the corner; watch for a vigorous recovery. And keep me posted.
