How many military victories can be traced to the army members believing they would go straight to (their) Heaven if they died?

To start you off, I’m thinking the Vikings, Judas Maccabeus, the Umayyads, Ottomans, Agincourt and a host of medieval battles as well as individual battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. WWI and II are more complicated, so you can ignore those is you like. Far Eastern examples would also be good.

Every clash of the various Chinese dynasties can be traced to some kind of divine belief…same with what happened to unify Japan.

Really, the main reason for conquest among the ancients always boiled down to rational by way of divine mandate.

Thx Jeremy, that was my guess, the pattern is so obvious in Europe and Africa that it was likely the same in the East. If you or anyone can point me at a source of detail for China, Japan or S America, Native Americans or polar and polynesian folks, that’d be great! Obviously people like Cortes felt God was on his side, and the Aztecs thought he was one of their own gods come to claim them at the end of their world. That’s what u get for mis-reading the stars…
