Ready2beamommy, My husband and I both said before my testing and after our first ultra sound that we would not abort if we had a downs baby, But it is a personal choice. A women I work with is 8 weeks futher then me and about 8 years younger then me, her baby boy weighs 13 oz and my baby girl is also 13oz she has been going to UVA and as of today has been put on bed rest. She has good and bad days, sometimes she just feels he is not going to make it so why not get this nightmare over and other days she knows that mircles do happen, I could not imagine being in my 20’s and knowing that if this child is serverly retarted then the rest of her life is going to be a challenge. If she choose to abort, I would support her because she is young enough to try again and she knows this baby boy may never ever even really know what, life, love and happiness really is. NOw this is a sever case and specialist still do not know what is going on. So each couple needs to support eachother and go in this 100% together and have good commucation.

have a good conversation with your doctor, I am now 20 weeks pregnant and just found out I am having a girl. I am also 34 years old, So I did have the Downs testing done and the Trisomy. I work with a women who is in her 20’s and is 8 weeks futher then me, Both or our babies weigh 13 oz at this time. Something is not right with her pregnancy but no one knows what yet. All her chromosone testing came back normal. So she is going for a second opinion.

It is normal to have these worries and I think evey women goes through these types of thoughts. Everything is so good so far for me BUT I know at anytime something could always go wrong. I know a women who had to much amnioc fluid and at around 8 1/2 months the baby strangeled itself inside her womb. So lots of reading and education and conversations with your doctor my lessen your worries.

Congrats and enjoy, It goes fast, I remember thinking wow I can’t wait to get a belly and I swear I went from 8 weeks to 20 weeks in a blink of a eye Oh and my test results for Trisomy were 1 in 10,000 and for downs 1 in 3,300 these are chances I am willing to take and very good numbers

Umm, it most certainly does make a difference if your child has a mental retardation or not. Im not sure of the chances, but im pretty sure they can test for that, though. Abort it if it does have something wrong with it.

Answer #5

mental diseases do seem to be more likely among children with a parent who has a family history. Although there is still a chance it could happen, just lesser. Many things can factor in also, such as if you drink during pregnancy, or smoke, the chances of your baby being born with something such as FAS is great.

Well if its two normal people chances are that either of you may carry a recessive gene for some disorder…

And if each of you carry a recessive gene then the child will need to have both of those recessive genes passed on to them for it to actually have an effect… So basically it’s like a 1/4 chance I think =S But thats ONLY if you both have the recessive gene…

If only one of you does then theres no way that the child can get something like that unless your a heavy smoker or drinker, etc at the moment…

But if you have no past history of disorders in your family like that then neither of you probably carry the gene…

All in all I think that the chances are VERY minute of your child obtaining a disorder from either your or your mate.

Hope this helps =]

well I dont know what it is for all the genetic defects or developmental problems, but for Down syndrome it is about 1 in 800…

It’s understandable that you’re worried about your baby, but unless there’s a history of a genetic defect, the odds of your baby having any problems is probably quite small… you need to talk to your doctor about this, but you really should be fine… just make sure you’re keeping as healthy as possible, and your baby has a pretty good chance of having no issues…
