Answer:

Masturbation and Lust

One of the major sexual issues discussed throughout scripture is lust. Jesus condemned lust in the heart as adultery in Matthew. While most advertising, television shows, movies, magazines, and more promote lust, the New Testament describes it as a sin. Many Christians see masturbation as a form of lust, if your lust is causing you to masturbate.

Matthew 5:28 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who has looked a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (NIV)

Masturbation and Sex

Sex is not bad. God created sex to be something beautiful, right, and pure. It is supposed to be pleasurable. Yet most Christians believe that sex is to be enjoyed in marriage between a man and a woman. Many Christians believe that sex between a married couple is the only acceptable sexual act, and masturbation takes away from it.

Genesis 2:24 – “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (NIV)

Proverbs 5:18-19 – “Rejoice in the wife of your youth! A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you at all times, may you ever be captivated by her love.” (NIV)

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 - The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife’s body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband’s body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife. Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (NIV)

Masturbation and Self-Centeredness

Another argument against masturbation is that it is a self-centered activity rather than a God-centered activity. For some Christians, there is a belief that an orgasm actually brings a person closer to God. However, a majority of Christians believe that “pleasuring oneself” is about the self rather than God. Most Christians see their faith as having a God-focus, and that every act should be a way of edifying God. Thus, if masturbation is not helping to develop a relationship with God, it is a sin.

Psalm 119:35-37 – “Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statues and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.” (NIV)

Onanism

Onan’s name is often used synonymously with masturbation. In the scripture, Onan was supposed to dutifully sleep with his late brother’s wife to produce an offspring for his brother. However, Onan decided that he did not want to produce an offspring that would not be his, so he ejaculated on the ground.

There is great debate surrounding this scripture as an argument against masturbation, because Onan did not actually masturbate. He did actually have sex with his brother’s wife. The act he committed is actually called “coitus interruptus.” Yet, Christians who use this scripture refer to the self-pollution of Onan as an argument against the act of masturbation.

Genesis 38:8-10 – “Then Judah said to Onan, ‘Lie with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother.’ But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother’s wife he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so he put him to death also.” (NIV)

Be Your Own Master

Remember, you need to master your behavior, or else sin will master it for you. Even a good thing can become sinful without the right heart. Even if you don’t believe that masturbation is a sin, if it is controlling you then it is a sin.

1 Corinthians 6:12 – “Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial. ‘Everything is permissible for me’ – but I will not be mastered by anything.” (NIV)

Even though these scriptures are used as an argument against masturbation, they do not necessarily make masturbation as a sin very clear. Yet, it is important that a person look at the reasons for masturbation to see if the desire behind the act is actually a sin. Some Christians believe that, because masturbation does not hurt others, it is not a sin. However, other Christians ask a person to look deeper within to see if masturbation is building a relationship with God or taking away from it.

Yes, masturbation is a sin. Not just for Catholics, but all Christians. You will have to confess this, premarital sex, and any other sins to the priest. And yes, they both are mortal sins. Don't worry, you won't get excommunicated (banned) from the Church- that only happens when your sins are very serious. Go to confession, the priest gives you advice about your problems, and don't worry- he won't tell anyone your sins. If he does, HE will be committing a mortal sin.

God bless!

Interesting argument, yet sleeping and eating is also a selfish act, and how do they bring you closer to God and help you build a relationship with him?

All animals were created with the need to reproduce. However, it seems only humans and some primates have a problem controlling these urges. I mean, not to put down the human race and all, but the Don't be like dogs on the street, metaphor is kinda weak. Dogs don't have sex unless the female is in heat. This is the same for most animals.

We are given the urge to reproduce because, well, humans being of higher intelligence, get bored, and tend to rationalize things. Great, for the most part, but if we didn't have the instinct to do it and get some degree of satisfaction from it, frankly, we wouldn't do it! But at the same time, because of our higher intelligence, we tend to want to do things over and over when we find out that they're physically great. Some serial killers get sexually aroused by killing...

But, back on topic. Any religion is a discipline, and is all about discipline. Saving one's self for marriage takes a lot of discipline, just like not punching someone who said something insulting or stupid, not fighting(one of the most prominent of our instincts), not taking what's not ours, especially when there's no way we'd be able to get it through legal means, ect.

Masturbation can be considered a sin because it's idolatry. When someone masturbates intentionally, they are giving into the desires of the flesh. And really, no boy or girl is masturbating for no reason. The origins are never intellectual, they're all sexual. A result of our natural sexual urges. And by giving in, we are moving one step closer to committing something worse. You don't just go out and rob a bank one day(unless you're extremely desperate). It starts out small. Taking a drink from the gas station. Then mugging someone. Robbing that gas station. Then robbing that bank...

You see this pattern in just about anything, good or bad. You slowly become desensitized to a prospect, and eventually, you find yourselves doing something that a year ago you said you never would.

I am not Roman Catholic, but I know that the official position of the Roman Catholic can be found in the revised Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992). It states:

“By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. 'Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.' 'The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.' For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of 'the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

This is their official position, but they add that it is proper to take into account emotional immaturity, force of habit, a state of anguish, or other mental or social factors which lessen, indeed even extenuate, the individual's moral guilt.

How that really works out in a Catholic's life I do not know. The best person to ask would be a parish priest.

well animals, as in the above example, a dog does it only when the female is in heat is of course a valid answer but however a dog does it as soon as he matures, we human s however have intercourse oly when married which is often way after we attain pubity, therefore from the time of the onset of pubity til the time of marriage it is not natural to deprive your body of its sexual needs I.e to let out the semen its producing!! no doubt this happens during a nocturnal ejactulation (wet dream) but we are also being deprived of the pleasure of intercourse! the catholic church condems homosexuality on the grounds that its against nature but by us not satisfyin our sexual needs from pubity to marriage is also un natural. so im a lil skeptical of what the church is actually trying to say

I think you wouldn't be banned from church. After all, if you ask for forgiveness it should be ok as long as you don't keep doing it. That is what it is there for.
