Looking for good 1930-1940's drama type movie recommendations

Any suggestions appreciated.

Just getting into some of the older movies like Key Largo, 39 Steps, Brief Encounter etc...

Fantastic viewing and makes me want more of the same...

there are lots of good alfred hitchcock movies...

laura, the little foxes, shadow of a doubt.
those are just a few off the top of my head. they are all dramas. are you interested in comedy?
I am a huge film buff and would be happy to make a list for you.

I generally watch movies with my wife and although we enjoy modern movies, characters in movies from the 30's & 40's often tend to have far more depth as the movie has to be less reliant on special effects.

We also enjoy comedies, thrillers, dramas (my wife is not so much into war movies) and a list of recommended movies would be very much appreciated.

the entire thin man series is excellent! comedy/detective with william powell and myrna loy and their dog asta. very funny, clever, great dialogue.
