Is second life virtual world a waste of time?

Asked by skeedo over 2 years ago, 3 answers.

Hey was just wondering if anyone is a part of the second life virtual world. I just stumbled on it today and it has got me intrigued. It seems like a waste of time but all the same would like to know what it's all about. Thanks.

From what I've read, Second Life is a virtual world / game run by Linden Labs. You can create a full blown alternate ego and make your own house, island, etc, but I think you have to buy the land from them to get started.

What's interesting to me is that stuff you create in Second Life can be sold, offline, for real world dollars, as people who are too lazy / pressed for time, etc, don't want to make their own virtual mansion, but would pay a developer to create one for them.

Other than that, you can do the usual chat, meet people, etc. Hope that helps.

I've hear of businessmen having virtual meetings in Second Life. Barak Obamma even does presidential campainging in Second Life. There is potential for this sort of virtual reality based on the metaverse in Snow Crash. For most people it is just escapist entertainment.
