I have some friends who work at Wal-Mart.
Basically, just like any other business, they try to keep expenses low. In the case of walmart, they try to keep it really low. For example, after you're hired for a certain amount of time, you will be entitled to benefits. well-Mart will dismiss you just before benefits come due, and hire someone new, then do the same to them.
Now many people love the low prices at wal-mart, however it comes with a price. They help to drive down wages, so eventually, the only place you'll be able to shop, is at wal-mart. Personally, I avoid Wal-mart whenever I can.
Here's a real cool, but real funny video about all this from the guys at JibJab:

Is wal-mart a good idea?
Is Wal-Mart an evil corporate entity or a sound way of doing business? I have heard a lot of controversy about Wal-mart's policies and their cheap labor, but is what they are doing truly ethical even by the farthest stretch of ethics?
