I, personally, would not recommend them.
Yes, I know that I am young, and have not been to college yet, but I do know a lot about this kind of stuff.
One, with an education loan, you will be paying that off all the way through your college years, most likely into your future life as an Adult.
If you are a high achieving student, volunteer, anything in your community, you can be eligible for scholarships. They are the greatest way I think, because, well, if you get them, they get you in free! 
its the best thing if you have a secure future like if you are doing MBBS or if you are in a premier engg college...
But not if you are not sure about your career prospects...You may struggle to repay the loan
Contact your guidence counselor as soon as possible. You have many options. If you can get grants or scholarships, that's great and it doesn't saddle you with debts to pay back. Your state senators and representatives often have resources to help.
In reality it will take a combination of grants, loans, work programs, and personal loans.
