Brunette I am sure would be preferable to dun colored as they refer to in pugs. Yes, any shade of brown on a woman is considered to be brunette. There is a point of lightness that we refer to as sandy blonde, but that is kind of a judgment call.

You mentioned people with black hair...they are NOT brunettes. Only brown hair.
