Is it illegal to download music for my personal use only?

my parents wont let me buy the kind of music I listen to because they say its evil, you know they're christian freaks... so I want to download some music off the internet, and I'll only be using it for my personl use, it's not like I'll be selling it or...

something... but is that illegal? if it is how much trouble would you get in?

IT'S NOT ILLEGAL IF U PAY FOR UR MUSIC BUT I USE LIMEWIRE TO DOWNLOAD MY MUSIC AND I DON'T PAY FOR MY MUSIC IT'S PROBALLY ILLEGAL BUT I DON'T THINK YOU CAN GET CAUGHT

If you download something that's copyrighted (eg, through limewire) even for personal use, then it's illegal, unless the owner of the copyright has said explicitly that's OK.

It's why Napster was sued out of existed. There are TONS of ad supported online radio stations, use one of those...OR, find some indie bands you like, as a lot of those really do give away their music to spread the word about what they're doing.
