How to stop the pain of wisdom teeth coming through?

Autumn 09 Asked by lex_icon about 1 year ago, 13 answers.

My wisdom teeth are growing in, and have been doing so for quite some time. There's nothing wrong with them, my dentist says they don't need pulling out or anything, and they'll grow in fine. The only problem is they HURT! They don't hurt all the time,...

just once in a while, like for a week every 2 months or so, when they start coming through the gums. What are some good ways of stopping or lessening the pain? Any ideas?

Hi Lex,
We have something here in Britain called Bonjella.

It is a gel generally used to sooth mouth ulcers and it numbs the area you put it on.
I suspect you can but this or similar in the States.

oragel hon. it's the gel that numbs the gums. also, you can get teething tablets (babies use them). I assume they would help a little. also, make sure you're keeping them clean back there---I know it's gross, but swish with warm salt water. and, you can swish with benedril (don't swallow). it will numb you a little bit. try that.

also...see if chewing gum helps.

do not chew on ice. you could chew on a really cold, wet paper towel or washcloth.

good luck!

taking ibuprofen for three days straight will really help with the inflammation. also bags of frozen peas for 20 minutes at a time would soothe.

ok so I'm not a dentist or anything, but my mom is and I don't really agree with your dentist's opinion (like I said though...it's not like I'm qualified to give my opinion). anyways...there is a chance that your wisdom teeth will come in just fine, that there will be enough room, and that they will never bother you again. however, there is a greater chance that somewhere down the road they will give you a lot of trouble and be even more painful so that you will have to have them removed. and because women have this little thing called *luck* (lol) on their side, it will most likely happen at an opportune time when not much can be done about it...I.e. a pregnancy. in which case, you will have to wait through the pain for the surgery.

my advice is to get them out now while it's most convienient.

good luck and take that ibuprofen happy

tylenol and ibproufen, vicoden from your dentist or some patients have told me clove oil is supposed to numb it.
I am 31, and am getting my first wisdom tooth. (im a dental assistant) its very painfull and the best thing you can do, is go to your dentist and get some meds. however, it is a good idea to flush inder the gums of the newly erupted tooth because food can get trapped in them, causeing a infection. so also try not to chew on the wisdom tooth, I know it feels good, but its a no no.

I know what your going through, I'm 14 and mine are coming through at a rapid speed, it hurts like hell, I've been waking up in the middle of the night because of the pain, one thing I do find that helps is crunching on a pain killer, any, paracetamol, ibuprofen, just a pain killer, and let the powder stay on your teeth, it kills the pain for about 5 hours. it does taste pretty mank. but try eating something nice after if its possible not to also get rid of the powder. hopefully it'll help : )
