To preserve them, as in, drying them, you have to remove them from the water before they start to wilt. I know it's hard to do because they look so pretty blooming, but after they bloom, they will die, and if you try to preserve them like that, it won't work right.
Just place it in a dry place, and cut some of the long stem off. After they dry completely, remove the stems, and keep the rose head.
