How to make your lawn better?

Hello I have tried everything for my lawn. Fertilizer, grass seed, weed spray, mow at reg settings and let it grow strong roots. so why is my nieghbors yard perfect and green and I never see them out and mine is crab grass and clovers-and light green? My...

yard is shaded by two big trees but still gets moderate light. I water it every week if it doesnt rain and I fertilized in the spring and will in the fall. This is also a new yard, just moved in 4 months ago. any advice will help! Oh I live in the Mid west (iowa) so it is normal grass not nothern or fancy kind lol THANKS!!

Pesonally, grass lawns are evil, they use up water and fertilizer and serve no purpose. Can you plant perrenial shrubs and flowers? Less mowing, less watering.
Also, if you really want a lawn, mow it frequently and not too short! IF you let it grow a bit, and then mow, it will choke out the weeds!

I would try to aerate the soil, loosen it up and then spread some grass seed and cover it with potting soil, and water it daily (in the afternoon only- watering during the heat of the day will actually harm your lawn)

sometimes when there is a new yard the ground becomes so compacted that it is hard for the grass to really get a good start- loosening and aerating the soil could be just what the doctor ordered- if you spread grass seed and then put down more potting soil, your yard will look a bit bad at first until the seed takes root and begins to shoot up.
