So, you want to showcase the double helix shape of the DNA, use some toothpicks or perhaps popsicle sticks for the shape. Then you'll want to color them so that you have a pattern to represent the way the proteins are put together in the chain.

Color the sticks, first, and then glue them together. Something like balsa wood that you can cut out easily would work even better if you can manage, OR boil some pasta to give it some shape, then color, then glue. Good luck.
