To get your mad programming skillz:

1. Do something real -- you'll learn like crazy this way

2. Find a definitive site on the subject that you like. -- won't take you more than an hour to google a great language site out there.

3. Grab a book on the subject from your local bookstore.

Programming is not magic. Its hard work to learn the stuff. Its easy if you have an actual project to do, and you learn it as you do the project.

The best programmers in the world taught themselves. If you wait for someone to teach you, then you're probably not motivated enough to learn whatever language you like.

Some tips?

* Learn some languages to do with the web. (ruby, php, perl, python)

* learn a fundamental programming language (c, c++, pascal)

* Learn Ruby -- highly recommended

* While learning Ruby or PHP, learn HTML and CSS concurrently.

* Build a dynamic website or something. You can do this on your own computer.

If you follow my instructions, you'll be a pro in no time!

Gotta love esconsult1's advice! - especially that - programming is hard, the best programmers are self taught and you need to build your own website.

That is the best way to learn. Do it yourself. Use a place like yahoo-geocities or angelfire as they will help you with tools and hints. They have free areas available for you to build your own web site on too.

My own web site is from trial and error. I learned by doing. You don't want to use the easy site builders if you want to learn HTML code. Use a text editor like Wordpad to compose your code and upload it yourself. You can test it yourself or go to HTML testing sites to have them tell you what is wrong with it. There are sites that have form codes you can copy and paste or when you see a site you like a certain thing about what they are doing, you can always do VIEW and click on PAGE SOURCE to see their HTML code - do it now for this site. This helps teach you. Some have this turned off or only allow you to view it in part though.

Just a little extra info to get you started - hope this helps you

I learned BASIC, Pascal, IBM 370 assembler, then C. That was a pretty common path when I was a pup. I never really jumped on the C++ bandwagon because I never saw objects as that big a deal for C. A purely object oriented language like Smalltalk seems like a better choice to me for object oriented programming than tacking objects on an existing proceedural language.

Programming is a craft. There are smart people who aren't good programmers simply because they don't have a knack for it. Of course the only way to tell if you have a knack for it is to jump in and give it a whirl.
