The chances of it getting infected (if cared for properly) are slim to none.
There's this sea salt solution called H2Ocean. You can get it online, and I'm pretty sure piercing salons have it also.
Keep it clean and dry, after you eat or drink anything other than water, brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with mouthwash..
I don't think it matters which side you get it on... either side looks good.
You won't get an infection unless you don't have it done professional or you don't take care of it. I don't really think there is a girlie side. Get it on whichever side you want to. As the first person said, make sure you keep it clean and dry. If you have any other questions about care or anything else, talk to the piercer. I'm sure they won't mind to tell you what you need to know.
Well, if you get it pierced by a professional, then you most likely will not get an infection from that. Just make sure you look at their sterilizing methods and don't be afraid to ask them about it. If they can't tell you then walk right out of there. After you get it pierced, make sure to clean it with what they give you, and maybe try Biotene, [I'm not sure on the spelling of that one] you can buy it at any drug store and it works very well to wash the bacteria out of your mouth without any alcohol in it.
But also make sure not to wash it to much. Probably not more than twice a day.
As tempting as it may be, aswell, because it is in your mouth and your tounge will want to play with it, don't touch it because it will be swollen and irritated.
Try not to smoke for a while either.
Hope this helps.
