I am going to be a junior next year, and I am beginning to consider careers. One thing I have always had an interest in is psychology, particulary woking with abused children. I was just wondering how many years of school would I need to go to, and would...

I need to take additional years of school to specialize in abused kids? Thanks!

There's a lot of different career paths to follow in psychology, and working with abused children...

Psychiatry: 4 years undergraduate, 4 years medical school, 4 years residency, I cant really think of places where psychiatrists work with abused kids, they could, but it doesnt really take a medical degree, so unless the kid needs medication, is in a hospital etc...

Clinical Psychologists: 4 years undergraduate, 4-5 years doctorate, 1 year internship + hours needed to get licensing, depends on the state

Counseling Psychologists: 4 years undergraduate, 2 years masters - or you can go straight into the doctorate program (5 years), 1 year internship + hours needed to get licensing, depends on the state

Counselors - 4 years undergraduate, 2 years masters, + hours needed to get licensing, depends on the state

You dont 'specialize' as such in abused kids, depending on your track, you can specialize in children (doctorate program), or marriage and family (masters in counseling program), and then try and find internships that lead you to work with abused children
