Tampon applicators are designed to push in the tampon as far as it needs to go. So the answer to you question is the length of the half an unused applicator. You shouldn't feel it because the top two thirds of the vagina has no nerve endings. Make sure you insert the tampon towards your tailbone, otherwise, it will be quite uncomfortable.
Usually there are two little grooves towards the bottom of the top half of the applicator ..thats how you know where to stop insertion and push the tampon out of the applicator..Also in every box of tampons there is an insert with directions..and it says on that insert exactly how to insert it properly and how far to insert it.
Are you saying that you started for the first time or you started for the month? If you started for the first time, maybe you should just start out with a pad until you get use to your period. If it's not your first time, then you just insert it half way and push in the second half. When your fingers touch the vagina and you, basically, can't see it, then that should be it. You can always use instructions.
