How did people like mariah carey get famous?

I want to be a singer like mad but I don't no how, how did other singers get fameous? Thanx x x x

I think you need a special talent (dancing, singing, ect.) And then some hollywood people call you and if you accept their invitation...you may be famous. But you have to be really really good at your talent like Mariah Carey is!!

Learn how to be a singer--I.e. how to pursue singing as a career, not just as a hobby. That's not all there is to it, no matter what anybody else says. Even if a famous album producer says "You can't do that," then he had better think twice. Many people will try to rip you down and tarnish your self-esteem and reputation. Become a publicity hound. Eat, breathe, and sleep attention. Looks for photo ops. Speak up. Swipe up any chance to shake up the spotlight. Make yourself known.
Find the connections. Be in the places where big musicians/producers meet (clubs, dance halls)and act like you're part of the industry even if they don't know who you are.
Learn about music industry business to not get fooled.
Practice, practice, practice when you can.

[edit] TipsYou don't necessarily need to be a (good) singer--William Hung of American Idol fame, for example, became famous because he's a horrible yet amusing and entertaining performer.
Be a role model for younger kids if you're ages 12-18. They want to know what's right and what's wrong. Whats appropriate to wear and what's not etc. Plus, it sometimes will make adults realize why their kids should listen/watch someone, (like Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus, etc.)
If you want to dress "shockingly" (I.e. Marilyn Manson) prepare yourself for rude comments, and blames for rude kids. If you're not ready to do something like that, be a little more poppy and tween (for a little while).
