How can you tell how old a ring is?

I have this cameo ring old...shell open back ...10 kt gold...how do I tell how old it is? When did they start carving the kt on a ring? or jewelry? Just curious...thanks!

Take it to an experienced jeweller/antiques store, and get it looked at by a professional. They should be able to give you an accurate date on when it was produced.
