Gps system, program to avoid highways?

I am going to rent a car on my trip and I need gps (driving in la ,california) can you program these things to avoid major highways, I was told it is faster but still lots of traffic if you can stay off of the highways.

Different GPS systems have different capabilities.

All the ones I've used have the option to avoid expressways.

Some higher end units even get traffic updates and take this into consideration when calculating the optimum route.
