Gays in the military.

The Fiance and Me at a Luau Asked by mandyloo 10 months ago, 28 answers.

In Obama's campaign, he said that he would make it so that the military welcomed gay men and women into their ranks with open arms...
There is an articlein Newsweek about this.
Asking should gays be allowed to serve openly?

My personal opinion...

is, of course they should. I don't understand why this would still even be a question. To make someone hide their sexual orientation is incredibly old school and close minded. It should be the persons choice. The only reason I would feel this could be a problem... is if there was some sort of harrassment that would come out of this... in the barracks, etc... however, that goes right along with my opinion that we should not cater to close-minded people that way. It only helps to continue the ignorance and the shame.

What are your opinions on this subject?

Thats true mandy, and I did take that into consideration before I went ahead and explained.

Gay men in the military now will show no sign of being gay, they don't wanna get the boot.

But a gay man that is accepted will tell his stories at night just like any other man, and what I was also taking in was that there are straight men that are just too horny for their own good, horny straight man gets caught with a gay man in the barracks will make that straight man tell everyone he was raped and end up getting the gay man in a coffin.

Straight guys will never admit they did anything remotely homosexual, in fact they will deny it so much that everyone will figure he must be telling the truth, now any straight man is a little homophobic, even me, I don't care if someones gay, I don't care what they do in their own time because I don't judge, but try it on me and I wont like you at all anymore, and that makes me homophobic to a point. Any straight person will always be a little homophobic, which brings me to my conclusion.

One gay man tries one gay idea, 30 straight men beat him to death.

And I agree there Ty, but what they did for women was segregation as I mentioned, ladies/mens bunks separate in most cases. That would be hard to do with men, on account there could never be enough gay men to take up a room, would cost money as I stated above.

I agree with you. If they want to serve their country, they should be allowed to. They should be held to the exact same standards and rules as everyone else in the military and shouldn't be treated any differently.

We'll, think about it, 2-3 gay men in a room with 30-40 other people at night, at some point they will fool around with eachother and at somepoint they will get killed by the homophobic bunk-mates.

I agree they should be allowed, but I don't see how it would work, next you will see riots of people yelling that the death of one gay man because he tried to play 'hide the salami with another man in boot camp was because he was simply gay and did nothing, which is usually not true, people don't kill other people without provocation in the military, it just doesn't happen, the equivalent of this would be punching your grandmother in the eye because she said you look funny., despite all of this, there is no way the military could handle it, one gay man would do one thing wrong (sexually) and end up dead, then the rest of the straight military men will see it as an approval when the military tells the media he provoked his own death to go ahead and take out the rest of the gay men.

To which point, it would cost more money for the government, me and you as taxpayers and families of dead men.

Don't take me wrong, I don't judge, I just don't see it working logically.
With the problem of gay/straight bunking it would end up segregated at some point, then the riots would be about Gay Rights!, they would have their own gay Martin Luther King.

And with my imagination comes my responsibility.

What you have to realize akumo is that there are gay men in the military right now, that just don't come out and say they are gay. There are also so called straight men, that act in homosexual behaviour while they are in the army also.

I do understand what you are saying though.

That was one of the same arguments used to keep women out of combat (well that and other reasons), it some how managed to work... I guess not everyone simply has to have sex with someone else, just because they're available...

** AKUMO ,YOU'RE SAYING THAT YOU DONT SEE IT WORKING LOGICALLY AS THEY WOULD ALL END UP HAVING SOME MASSIVE ORGIE OR THEY WOULD RAPE SOME ONE. THATS MAKING THEM OUT TO BE RAVING SEXADDICTS OR RAPISTS AND THATS NOT TRUE! STARIGHT MEN AND WOMEN WORK TOGETHER BUT JUST BECUASE THEY ARE STRAIGHT AND ATTRACTED TO THE SEX OF THAT PERSON DOESNT MEAN THERE GOING TO HAVE SEX OR ANYTHING.

YES I AGREE THEY DESERVE THIS RIGHT. WHY SHOULDNT THEY? THEY'RE HUMANS AND YOU SHOULDNT BE SEGRAGATED FOR BEING DIFFERENT. EVERYONE SHOULD BE TREATED AS EQUAL. BEING GAY REALLY SHOULDNT HAVE EER PREVENTED ANYONE FROM BEING WHAT THEY WANT TO BE.

I am 98% sure they would have sex.

Not what I meant either, guess I shouldn't of explained it.

I think they should be allowed, but I like the policy of don't ask, don't tell.
If gays are just like everyone else, and their orientation doesn't matter, there's no need to make it public.

I mean, if a gay guy is talking to a close friend in the military and it comes up, fine, but when you're serving your country, there are more important matters than making sure everyone else knows you're gay and is ok with it.

Being gay IS NOT important when it comes to serving.

I do agree that the don't ask don't tell thing - works. I just think it's sad that they have to hide a huge part of who they are from everyone because of ignorance.

Everyone sitting around telling stories from back home, sharing memories and life experiences, they are stuck either lying or having to be quiet. They can't be open and I think it's terrible.

Although I realize nothing will probley change this.

By the way - I know plenty of gay men that have been or are interested in being in the mitilary.

I hope you realized how uneducated you just sound - how could anyone take you seriously if you talk like that. Come on.

If the don't ask, don't tell policy was removed, I still seriously doubt most gay people in uniform would openly admit it. The culture, and mindset, is still, unfortunately, very homophobic. I think it will be quite a while before it changes, regardless of whatever policy Obama enacts.

Mandy, I completely agree with your stance. I couldn't have said it better myself. But I think Akumo has a point that those who are out and gay would probably be accused of all sorts of stuff by homophobic peers. However, I don't think that should mean they shouldn't come out. Just that they need to take precautions to protect themselves.

Being gay has nothing to do with the military. They are just as able as any straight male/female to do their job right.

The LGBT should be able to join the military because the only reason there is a issue with this is because of insecurity of sexuality!
