because the hole in your ear is smaller than the gauge. try shoving a basketball into a drinking glass... it's not so easy. Plus... it kinda hurts.

Because you are putting something in your body that is not meant to fit. When your guaging something, your trying to make the hole larger, so of course it might be a little hard to put them in.
