Definitely the food tastes better over charcoal but it is a lot more hassle than a gas grill.
I've had both. For a long time we used charcoal but now we cook out so often that we use a propane grill. The grilled food still tastes great but it does lack some of the smoky flavor you get from charcoal.

For the bbq, do you prefer charcoal or a gas grill?
I grew up with a charcoal grill, so for me, if it doesn't have that charcoal taste, it's not real bbq. However, a friend of ours is a wizard with his gas grill, mostly because of the marinades, flavors and sauces. It still feels like it's missing...
something, though, and I always prefer the taste of charcoal (yeah, I know, it's less healthy for you). So how about you: is it real bbq if it's not charcoal?
