I guess it is one of those eye of the beholder kind of things.

Maybe they maybe they aren't. Why does it have to become a holier than thou debate though? Such as amblessed comment, 'Compare the lyrics with God's Word and you'll be able to discern..'

Maybe they are 'Christian' people with good music with a decent message instead of what 90% of modern music doesn't have. It's because of comments like that etc. that I refuse to step into a church anymore for anything but a wedding or a funeral and even then I'm hardpressed to do it.

Personally I love their music, it sounds good and if it's 'Christian' I don't hold it against them.

Are you saying that any song by any artist should be straight copied out of the bible? If so, half the worship songs shouldn't be used in churches or other meeting and most of the other half that are left shouldn't be played because they are depressing...

It's funny how Christians always want to know if this band is in their camp. their minds are thinking 'The music is good but will Christ judge me on listening to them?' I had the same question when I was approached by a radio exec pushing them as a Christian band. Truth be told. It's music and Jesus doesn't judge us according to our music taste, it's the lyrics and what we do with them . It's our heart. The real issue is we love the music but can't quite place the lyrics. Enjoy the group and just keep your walk in line with the Holy Spirit.

xenos, you said: Why does it have to become a holier than thou debate though? Such as amblessed comment, 'Compare the lyrics with God's Word and you'll be able to discern..'

I came at it from a position of what I know to be FACT - don't know how you read into it 'holier than thou' - I'm just a sinner like we all are but a sinner who has been 'forgiven' by the grace of God / sins covered by the blood on the cross - simple: every person will either accept or reject Him...your choice...wish you the best !!

You say 'I'm just a sinner like we all are...' What makes a person a sinner? What makes a person not worthy of 'Gods love'? Thepoint I'm getting at is that a lot of 'Christian' people tend to be in this dreamworld lala land living in a little bubble.

I used to go to church, I did 3 years of bible college, I was youth leader for 8 years plus a student leader for the last 2 years of highschool. I was living a lie, to me. I saw so much hypocracy in church and in the christian circle it was disgusting. I got tired of it.

I met a girl at the end of summer a few years ago, helped her find her dog and asked if I could take her for coffee. We ended up going for dinner and becoming great friends. Some of my christian friends had met her on occasion, one in particular had gone with his wife and us and some others for dinner a few times. In November of that year I found out she was an exotic dancer one night a week. When I informed my friend of this, he$ asked if I was going to still be friends with her, I said 'Of course.' He got out of my car 20 km's from his house and walked home. He would not get back in my car. The next day he 'I can't be your friend if your going to be friends with people like her.' Real Christlike. He was on the search committee for a Sr. pastor for the church at the time, and has since been elected an elder. He ruined my name in the church by telling people that I was dating a stripper, which I wasn't and that I was a regular at stripclubs and that I would probably recruit 18 and 19 yr old girls to be strippers if I had the chance.

I wonder, What Would Jesus Do???

Hw would probably be her friend as well.

Personally, in my own experience, I think the Bible, which so many people spend their life studying is nothing more than a semi decent story book.

I can't say I don't believe in God, I'm here right. I don't think I'm freakin stardust. I just don't have much faith in an entity that I cannot see, hear, smell etc. In all my years of studying the bible, praying learning more and more about the religion of Christianity, I never once 'heard the voice of God.' I got tired of waiting.

What makes you think the bible is FACT?

Whether this band is christian or not, why should it matter?

I believe that their lyrics are centered toward the christian faith. most christian rock bands today aren't as adamant about revealing that they are, infact, a christian band BECAUSE of all the people who would purposely stop listening to them because of it. no one wants to be discriminated against.

think about it. if they can reach all of the people out there who aren't christians, in a way that speaks to them individually, don't you think those non-believers are going to be more likely to come to God?

all I'm saying is that it is possible that flyleaf is a christian band. however, none of us really know their hearts. only God knows. for all we know, they're either a christian band in disguise, trying to reach the hearts of people who are too stubborn to open up to the possiblity of something greater than them, OR they're a secular band, just trying to make it into the music business. afterall, it's a whole lot easier to make it into the 'christian' music business. just ask Creed.

so whether or not they're a true christian band, really doesn't matter. if you find christ through their lyrics, then GREAT! if you don't, then hopefully someone else will come along to help plant that seed in your life. in the meantime, ENJOY THE MUSIC!!! it's good!

In their song 'supernatural' heaps of people perceived it as a song about god being so fantastic. But I took it as them saying god is a waste of time. Hm, I guess it depends on your beliefs. I'm sure christians would take the song one way, whereas me being an athiest, I took it a different way. Type them into google I'm sure you'll find out!

why does it matter, christian or not the music rocks and its not like playing marilyn manson or anything. they don't have any curses in lyrics and why put a label on a great band anyway just enjoy the music for what it makes you feel. the christians didn't invent music but definitely gave us something to sing about. to be honest I think you can call any band that doesn't curse and doesn't sing about things that involve sin christian even if it doesn't mention anything holy or sacred or preachy. music is music and its how it makes you feel after listening to it for me than the lyrics themselves. one thing that does wig me out though is christian metal. metal was started on 3 fundamental chords which were stated to be evil or from evil source/s. if you want to question anything it would be that there's books written on that stuff. STOP QUESTIONING THE MUSIC BUT MORE THE MOTIVE IS WHAT YOU SHOULD WORRY ABOUT. labels are for intellectuals that have nothing better to do.

I was downloading Christian songs off of limewire to kind of add to my archive of music because after listening to some songs for so long - no matter how good they are - they all start to sound the same. I had heard that Flyleaf was a Christian band but I had also heard that they were a 'non'-Christian band. When I did a search for it I stumbled across this discussion and read along ... There has been a lot of thought put into this – that’s for sure - and I just wanted to put in what I know and think ... It does matter if a band is 'Christian' or not to the Christians who are serious enough to read into it deep enough. If a Christian person writes a song and lets a secular band play it what kind of effect will it put on someone spiritually? Of course some people will roll their eyes at me when I say that but it is something that a serious Christian should be concerned about. Yes the lyrics are the most important part but what if the band is just trying to be deceptive and get more attention by being appealing to the Christian music people and everyone else who might have a problem with that kind of music. Think about it, all of you people have spent so much time and thought on whether this band is Christian or not you now couldn't forget their name if you tried ... or people who were undecided before are now encouraged to find out for themselves ... so now everyone listens to it for one reason or another ... WOW ... THAT'S AMAZING ADVERTIZING ... What if Flyleaf is trying to stand on both sides of the fence so they can be popular with more than one crowd?

Revelation 3:16
15: I know your [record of] works and what you are doing; you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were cold or hot!
16: So, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of My mouth!

If they are Christian then they can't argue with that ... that is Gods word saying that he’d rather have you one way or the other than undecided because it makes him sick and want to spit you up out of Him ... ...

I have found out nothing about Flyleaf except that they might be a group that could help me along with my Christian walk. I don't go around and listen to choir music all the time but I do try to think, 'will this help or hurt?' ... When someone sits down and thinks about it that's the only two things that anything can do with your walk with God. It's like standing on an icy hill ... you can either work forward and carry things that can help your climb or you can load yourself down with things that will either directly hinder your accent or will accumulate and slow you down to a stop then a backslide... I'm not saying that listening to a non-Christian group will make you backslidden but several choices like that or a mindset saying that it's ok will. ... ... I'd like to say one more thing to the person who said that they had gone to church for a long time, was a youth leader, and went to Bible collage for a while... May God help you ... I know He extends His mercy and grace to the ill-informed but you know what's right and I hope you have time to get your act together. There may be flaws in you, in people around you, in your pastor, in your church, and maybe even in your denomination but God Himself never has a flaw... ... ... ... I am part of a denomination that some people call 'radical' because we have standards and forms of worship that other people see as to much. When I am talking to any of my friends that don't believe the same way I do about God and church I always tell them that they have to always take the next step to get closer to Him. When it comes down to it they probably know what they should or should stop doing in order to get closer to Him but are reluctant to take that step because it might be inconvenient to there flesh so they ignore it. ... Lots of people go through life with the label (CHRISTIAN) but never follow the word of God to a depth that a person who has been apart of it their entire life should. They can be as far away from God as the worst person imaginable and have it worse off because they don't even know it. … Sorry I know I’m long winded, I hope this helps somebody.

I agree with that somewhat, but my mom always told me this and I stick by it as much as I can:

GIGO: Garbage In Garbage Out.

So yeah, God may not judge us by the music we listen to, but if what you are listening to affects your Christian walk then you shouldn't be listening to it.

Also the Bible says in Proverbs 4:23 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.'

So I think it is a personal choice, but you do need to be careful.

I try to follow a 70/20 rule, where 70 percent of the music I listen to is Christian and 20 percent is secular.

And I am by no means trying to make myself seem 'holier' than anyone else because we all have our faults.

I wasn't sure, but when listening to the lyrics of 'All Around Me' I had to pose the same question. Upon further research I learned that all of the members of Flyleaf are of the Christian faith. Lacey Mosely (the bands lead singer) said, 'We all share the same faith. And so when we deal with the whole 'Christian band thing,' we kind of think about something P.O.D. says, like, 'If you're a Christian, it affects everything in your life. So if you're a plumber, does that make you a Christian plumber?' ' 'I don't know the answer. We're a band, it's part of who we are, so it comes out in our music, and it's the fuel for what we do. And finding faith saved my life. So I'm not ashamed of it at all. And most of our album reflects that.'

Being of Christian faith myself, I find bands such as Flyleaf a breath of fresh air. But as someone previously stated, music is music and it's all in how you choose to interpret the lyrics.

I cant imagine why anyone would get so upset with someone posing this question (I.e.Xenos). No one said anything about not listening to them if they werent a 'Christian' band. It sounds more to me that people get excited when they find something they like that also delivers a positive Christian message.

In my mind there are 2 requirements for being a Christian.
1. Profess that Jesus Christ is you Lord and Saviour.
2. Live it out everyday.
Flyleaf appears to be doing both. So Im sorry Xenos...were claiming this one...but we will let you keep Slayer...for now...lol God Bless

I'm sorry.. but I just had to chip in on this whole 'Christian Rock Group' argument. Everyone keeps putting down Christians because we want a distinct class of music.

Yes, we do prefer Rock Groups who are Christian. Why? Because we want to enjoy music for what it's worth. Personally, I don't want to listen to rock groups who sing about death, destruction, sex and drugs. I'm sorry if the music we listen to actually has a reason.

Xenos, I would love to invite you to our Church if you're ever near Griffin, Georgia. I specifically hate it when people attend church, and for whatever reason stop believing because of things they see going on. Not every Church is that way. I hate to think of Churches who are not about God's Word, but I'm sure there are some out there.

'Personally, in my own experience, I think the Bible, which so many people spend their life studying is nothing more than a semi decent story book.'

I cannot believe anyone would post that. It's a slap to the face for anyone who believes. I find it most disturbing. I'll pray for you tonight.

There are also a lot of other bands out there that the secular world refuses to acknowledge as 'christtan'. even though they are.

I understand that all the members are Christian. Which is good. And that their faith comes out in their music because it is part of who they are. Even better. The only thing I see wrong is, if they are a Christian band then they would boldly proclaim the name of Jesus in all their songs and not just call Jesus, 'You'. As in 'I can feel YOU all around me.' It makes me think of churches overseas where all the congregation is brought out and are threatened to be shot if they don't renounce their faith. Most of them will renounce it all the while praying and telling God that they REALLY don't mean it and that he knows their true feelings. But you also have believers overseas who will actually take the bullet rather than renounce Jesus. Conclusion: Flyleaf = Good band, but weak, scared, childish Christians.

Wow! How very bold of you. Have you heard their song, 'Cassie'? She proclaims that she would take a bullet for God. That is quite a statement, and not from a 'weak, scared, childish Christian'. The Lord tells us that we will know them by their fruits. I believe that Flyleaf has displayed clearly where they stand spiritually so far. As far as not being 'labeled' as a Christian, remember that Lacey said that is currently undecided. They, I'm guessing, are probably praying about it. I am eager to find out what happens next. Here is a website with the lyrics to all the songs on their self-titled album http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Flyleaf/So-I-Thought.html

I'm sorry, but what a moronic comment. Since when does a song with a spiritual message have to SAY Jesus and God? I think that's your own bigoted theory on what Christian music ought to be. At my church, plenty of our worship songs say 'Him', 'He', 'You'. So what's the problem with that? Trying to say God and Jesus every other word just to make it UTTERLY clear to bigots like yourself that yes, the band is christian, or at the very least made up of Christian members is completely useless. It's music. Not a sermon. If you're that quick to make rude judgements like that, and the rest of your congregation thinks similarly to you, then thank God I don't attend your church. How awful that would be.

They are not a christain rock band, though all the members are christian.
Look at their website, mtv article- whatever.
Lacey herself said that they are all christians but they dont like to be labled strictly as a religous band. Of course it will show through to their music sometimes, but that doesnt mean they strictly christian.
Just because they show up on christian statians and stuff doesnt mean they are. It just means that the person running the station thinks its a good song to show faith.

All music falls into a genre or mix of. 'Christian' is not a genre. It is a way of LIFE,(not a religion). Christian music can be of any genre. The music itself expresses that way of LIFE. The musicians that preform the music either live and have that way of life or don't live and have not that way of life. That can sing and dance about the Christian Way of Life but this in and of it self does not make them Christian performers, neither do Christian performers always sing about the Christian Way of Life. Simply put, 'Christian music' is not a category or genre. Rock, Rap, Soul, Blues, Hip Hop etc... falls under the term category or genre.
