Who finds it ridiculous to petition against the phrase "God bless you" in schools (read more)?

I recently saw on the news that a man was petitioning using the phrase “God bless you,” in schools. He claimed it was “disruptive” and an “out-of-date expression.” Also in his argument, he discusses that religion and school shouldn’t be mixed. In my opinion, I don’t believe many people consider “God bless you” to be used as a religious term but simply because it is polite.

In my defense, since I know this will be brought up in replies, I am not saying he shouldn’t be able to speak his mind, but that when I saw this video I found it to be ridiculous.

It is actually a really common petition and a lot of people take it as a religious thing to say. Spanish speakers don’t even say it to one another…. nor do a lot of other cultures most other cultures say good health. In any case I don’t find it ridiculous in the fact that he is stating what he believes and has good evidence to back it up. I do think its ridiciulous in the fact that people in america…well the world actually are becoming so “sensitive” to “offensive” things.

Answer #2

I have to agree with you- religion is very sacred in mnay other cultures. I simply find it ridiculous that he is punishing students for using a phrase that is only used to be polite.

Answer #3

Well when you have nothing else better to do…..

Answer #4

I don’t think it should necessarily be used in schools, but I don’t see anything wrong with people saying it either. You said he was punishing students? Is he a teacher or something? I think that’s wrong. Generally if someone uses it, it’s to be a kind gesture, not an insult. I’m not a religious person, and I would take no offense to someone saying that to me.

Answer #5

I have thought that the phrase is quite ridiculous for a long time. We don’t say anything when people cough, or burp, or fart. Why do we say something when we sneeze. I stopped saying it a long time ago. It is outdated and antiquated. It serves no useful purpose. But to punish students for saying it is kinda stupid. For most people it is just an automatic thing they say. Which to me is even more of a reason not to say it as there is no real meaning behind it. It is just something said by rote.

Answer #6

I thought poeple said it because supposedly a sneeze makes u skip a heart beat. So they say God Bless You???

Answer #7

I no their a bunch or cry babies lol. People make big deals out of nothing really. So what someone said God bless you. they were just tryin to be nice and they didnt cause any harm. u didint burst into flames and got cast back into hell. lol.

Answer #8

Actually the origins of the practice are unknown. There are many explanations like yours, but no one knows for sure. Regardless, it is an antiquated practice that is silly and based on superstition.

Answer #9

I see. I read that it also came from Pope Gregory the Great. He said it during a bubonic plague epidemic in the 6th century

Answer #10

What ever happened to freedom of speech in America? Banning the use of a phrase that is in no way meant to be offensive, but rather meant in a polite manner, is childish..

Answer #11

One does not have freedom of speech when in a public school, or a work place for that matter. One can not stand up in class and start reading from the bible. Outside of school they can say whatever they want. Not that this teacher isn’t being ridiculous, but it is not a free speech issue.
