Does putting parakeet eggs in a nesting box help them hatch?

Asked by wakitout01 over 2 years ago, 9 answers.

I have a female parakeet and she started to lay eggs and she laid 2 eggs... does putting them in a nesting box help them to hatch and how do eggs become fertile?

Hi wakitout01,

Parakeets will lay eggs at specific times of the year or if the environment is conducive to rearing. Even if the eggs are not fertilized by a male, the female will still lay them, and they will be empty. If you do not have a male parakeet, and there is no way she has been in contact with a male parakeet, the chances of the eggs being fertilized is zilch.

Parakeets will lay eggs occasionally. Without a male they are not fertilized,so will come to nothing. Do not remove the eggs until your bird loses interest in them completely, otherwise she will continue to lay, which can, eventually be unhealthy for your bird.

Do you have a nesting box? This is also something the parakeet needs and of course the male. They also need to perches to go through their mating ritual.

It is best if the nesting box is in the cage before she starts laying. Let her sit on the eggs until she gets bored...DO NOT remove them. If she does not have a mate then obviously the eggs are infertile and will not hatch. Just let her go through the process because if you remove them she will just lay more to replace them. This could lead to egg-binding, which can be fatal. Make certain she gets plenty of calcium. Cuttle bones are high in calcium and you can get supplements. Good luck.

What do you put inside the nesting box? We have 1 egg and we have never had this happen before. We have read that if there is not a nesting box that they wont have eggs!
