How to learn how to site read fast?

Asked by cassiechoirgeek 6 months ago, 5 answers.

Does anyone know a good way to learn how to site read fast? Any good books, tips, anything? I have the basic knowledge but It all just doesn't click. Oh, and I am a singer... and a girl so all I really need to learn is how to read on the treble clef. The bass clef and tenor clef would be nice but really treble is all I need.

The best way I learned was by learning intervals on the piano and associating them with songs I already know. Like an octave is the beginning of Somewhere over the rainbow. And an M6 is the ''N-B-'' in the NBC news theme.

Of course you have to correlate all of this with the music theory you already know. So when you look at sheet music you can automatically think to yourself ''Hey that's an M6 - N-B-(C)' After a while you'll get faster at it and not have to think about it as much.
This page goes into depth about what I'm talking about:

It might seem a little overwhelming to take it all in at once but just take in a little at a time and you'll get it.

I don't know any way to learn to sight read quickly.

Your ability to pick up this skill will depend on how good an ear you have and how well you understand the relationships between notes in the key.

Some people have a knack for this and pick it up easier than others but sight reading does require practice and study; there aren't really any shortcuts.

well I have trouble sight reading but when I look at the notes...sixteenth/whole or whatever I think of where I have seen it and than apply it...honestly I think sight reading is rediculous!!! I am a musician and practice makes perfect so why do I need to no this right away?? lol but I don't know I have just been taught!

I learned sight reading very easily. when I first learned, we had a saying for the line notes and the space notes. Line notes were E, which is every. G is good. B is boy. D is does. F is fine. EGBDF. Space notes spell face So just remember F-A-C-E. For bass clef spaces notes are A- all C- cows E-eat G-grass. And line is G-good, B-boys D-do F-fine A-always. hope this helps. This was the method I used to use on my sight reading tests

I play flute and I also have to sight read for auditions and things like that. First thing I do is look at the key signiture, then the time signiture. After that I quickly look over the piece and look for parts that may be hard. I drill those. Then play the piece.
