They can go on as long as 2 years, I know my friends did, which is crazy. By the sounds of it you don't have anything to worry about as long as you've been taking proper care of your child and he doesn't have anything bad against you like that.

They can go on for very long periods of time, my parents are still fighting about custody, and this is 15 years after their divorce. It all really depends on how well the two parents can cooperate.
