Does anyone have a contraceptive coil?

I am thinking about having a coil fitted and I have been researching it. But of course the more I know and hear about it the better really. I have looked at other forms of contraception but so far this sounds the most likely to suit me.

Any experiences/information is most welcome.

I have no personal experience of it, but I know a little bit about them. There are basically two types - a copper IUD, or a hormone-releasing IUD. The copper one works by releasing small amounts of copper which creates an environment that doesnt support pregnancy, while the hormone-releasing one releases progesterone which acts directly on the uterus to make the lining thin, and therefore unreceptive to implantation. Both increase your risk of pelvic infection slightly, and they both last about five years (the copper ones can last longer). The copper one can make your periods longer and heavier, and the progesterone one can make your periods less frequent. Another long term contraceptive option you might want to look into is a progesterone implant, which lasts about three years.
