Pink for girls and blue for boys is not universal. I understand that in some parts of the world (Belgum for example) the colors are reversed and boys are dressed in pink and girls in blue.

In the early part of the last century in the US red was the color for boys and blue for girls. Baby clothes were normally light colored so less than a hundred years ago in the US boys were dressed in pink and girls in light blue.

This leads me to another color question I've always had.

Why is red such a special color that it has so many names? We have light blue, green green and purple but the color red has a special name pink instead of light red. We also have dark blue, green, purple but a dark shade of red is called maroon. What makes red so darn special?

Red isn't special. It's the same as any other color. Colors and their lighter hues are called tints whereas colors and their darker hues are called shades. The difference between the two is that tints require the introduction of white while shades are mixtures of colors with black. Maroon isn't just a dark shade of red though, it's actually the mixture of brown and red.

FilletofSpam, it's not just red that has so many names. For instance, instead of saying blue, there's azure, cerulean, cornflower, robin's egg, etc.

Also, dark red and maroon aren't the same thing. Maroon almost has a bit of brown in it.

My parents had twins, a boy and a girl. When they were little, my brother Brennan always wore blue and my sister Jamie always wore pink. That is the only reason I can think of. For my parents, it was much eaiser to tell them apart. Now that they are older, they wear what ever they want (mostly.)
