Mostly for health reasons and beauty! If I was a male I sure woudn't want no doctor cutting on me. Our Lord gave us these beautiful bodies, and we should be happy w/them. Not cutting on them or mutiliating them.

Reasons for circumcision fall into three broad groups:
* for an immediate medical indication
* to prevent future disease
* as an act of religious dedication.

Circumcision for an immediate medical reason
Contrary to common belief, the foreskin cannot be pulled back (retracted) in almost all newborn babies. Well-meaning parents do not need to try cleaning under the foreskin until it has become fully retractable of its own accord because attempts to pull back a non-retractable foreskin can result in pain and possibly injury.

About 50 per cent of one-year-old boys will have a non-retractable foreskin, 30 per cent of two-year-olds, about 10 per cent of four-year-olds and about 5 per cent of 10-year-olds.

Circumcision to prevent future disease
Prevention of disease is the second most commonly given reason for circumcision after religious reasons, although the evidence that it has any beneficial effect on future health is very poor. The practice is, more likely, rooted in cultural traditions, although western societies may find this an uncomfortable conclusion.

Circumcision as an act of religious dedication
The circumcision of male children is a central feature of both Judaism and Islam. It is also important in many African and New World cultures.

An increasing number of committed Jewish and Muslim people reject circumcision on ethical grounds, although they are certainly the minority at present. Attitudes to circumcision may provoke fierce hostility within families and among communities. In the past, wars have been fought, and thousands have died, to preserve the right to circumcise when rulers from other cultures forbade it.

Circumcision is becoming controversial.

In my high school health class the teacher acknowledged that there were people who disagreed with him but he said if you are in doubt have your sons circumcised since it makes hygene easier and he will look more like most men.

Jewish and Muslim law require male circumcision though even in these religions it isn't universal. Worldwide most Christians males are not circumcises though the practice is common among US Chrsitians.

A few studies have demonstrated a lower HIV female to male transmission rate in circumcised males. On the other hand circumcision is an operation and there is some risk associated with it.

My personal vote is to not circumcise and my wife agrees. We only have one daughter so were never personally faced with the choice.

Theories include that circumcision is a form of ritual sacrifice or offering, a health precaution, a sign of submission to a deity, a rite of passage to adulthood, a mark of defeat or slavery, or an attempt to alter esthetics or sexuality.[4] Male circumcision is a religious commandment in Judaism as well as in Islam,[5][6] and customary in some Oriental Orthodox and other Christian churches in Africa.[7]

Circumcision is common in the Middle East, the USA and parts of Africa and Asia. According to WHO, 30% of men worldwide have had the procedure, mostly in countries where it is common for religious or cultural reasons.

Dear arkarhpyoewae,
Today we are given the choice to have our males circumcised a birth. Those who have had it done found less of a chance to get infections due to lack of cleaning. Also the last stats out is that it can prevent the HIV virus up to 60% this is not a substitute for being unprotected and taking all precautions but it is a significant number. Some males report a much happier sex life after circumcision; the reasons varied from the appearance to less friction. In most cases it ends up being the choice of the parents right after birth. Doing the operation later in life can be uncomfortable but carries very little risks.
Sue...good luck

There are hundreds of reasons for cutting part off the normal healthy genitals - all bad reasons. You can see them counted and countered/answered at circumstitions dot com.

There are many good reasons for not cutting part off a baby's genitals, but the main one is that it belongs to that person (whether a boy or a girl) and nobody else.

I may contradict myself but I do believe getting circumsized is advisable. There may be lots of intonations about relegion, but I personally feel that for quatie number of times one needs to be circumsized, for medical and hyginical and convience reasons. Lets not talk about relegions, all may differ, but its more practical and practically durable.

It's for religious/cultural reasons. Some women think it's attractive so men just do it.
