As opposed to cameras for things other than photography?
Sorry about the snarky remark. When your mom was an English teacher it is hard not to critique other people's writing.
Being a little more specific, what kind of photography are you interested in? are you doing fine art photography? snapshots?, portraits? sports or action photography? journalism?
Agreed with filletofspam.
I'm not sure what your level in photography is, but a digital camera is always a pretty easy start for simple photography. Those range from 200-500 dollars, depending on the quality you want for it, and how many mega pixels you want. I have the Canon PowerShot SD750 Digital ELPH. I love it dearly.
I also use a Minolta SLR film camera, because I prefer developing photos in the dark room as opposed to photoshopping pictures. Film cameras are harder to use, and you would need equipment, and developing chemicals to be able to print the pictures you take. There is a lot more to learn, but if you're serious about photography, it is seriously fun. You would just have to invest a lot of time and money into it.
There is also the Digital SLR cameras, but those are really expensive, so I'm saving up for one. [Particularly the Canon EOS 12.8MP, but that one ranges up to $3,300,000, and I certainly don't have that kind of money right now. Maybe when I'm older.] Those are also tougher to learn how to use, but once you get the hang of it, they're really the coolest things.
Basically, if you're serious about photography, it doesn't really matter how much a camera would be. Just save up, that's what I did. Do some research on different types of cameras, and good luck! I hope I helped.
