I do about 300 sit-ups every other day, and it works for me
and you have to do the exercise where (I dont know the name) you are lying flat on your back, and you legs are closed together, you raise them up in the air as many time as you can, to work the lower muscle in your stomach too.

Diet is key to loosing abdominal fat, or any other for that matter. You can do as many sit ups or crunches you want but your going to need to loose the fat first, then you can work on sculpting your abs with abdominal exercises. So my recommendation would be a clean diet with lots of cardio and you'll see the results your looking for
