Belief in high power, but not god persay = atheism?

Cheery Asked by kittygirly about 1 year ago, 11 answers.

Would one be considered an Atheist if they didn't believe in God or followed any religion-- but still thought there was something, perhaps some kind of higher power, in the universe?

That depends on what you mean by 'higher power'. If the higher power is intelligent, then I think that counts as a god, in which case you are not an atheist. But if the 'higher power' is not intelligent, then you're an atheist.

As long as you are open to truth...

It is my sincere prayer that you find it.

Father, I pray for truth in this girls life. Amen.

...think so?

I marked it 'unhelpful' because I think they just don't know what they're talking about.

There are atheists who do believe in the supernatural. All we can know about an atheist is that s/he does not have a belief in any gods. So I would agree that such a person could be a deist, pantheist, etc.

To answer your question, no, you would not be considered an athiest...
a·the·ist –noun a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Agnostic would be closer but not quite the right term, either:
ag·nos·tic –noun One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God. One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.
