A backpack- fanny packs are way too touristy! Not only do backpacks look cooler, but you're not shouting to the world that oyu're a tourist!

to me it really depends, im a somewhat messy person who carries a lot of stuff around lol fanny pack would be good for smaller trips to like national parks or disney land but back packs I only use for like school or for a sleepover or somthin. I think they both have their own different uses
hope I helped

I agree with mimi15
fannypacks would be good for carrying small things like a cellphone, Ipod or whatever. but wth backpacks you can use them for school and hiking trips or whatever. but fannypacks seemed so old fashioned! lol. sorry to people who like them

Depends on what you're them for, and also partly on your own preferences.

To take the latter - people with back problems can often use a fanny pack even if they can't wear a back pack/rucksack.

Of course, rucksacks have much, much greater capacity. With a properly constructed and adjustable one you can carry all you need for a longer hiking/camping trip, especially if you pack it properly, with the heavier things near the top.(You want a fairly high centre of gravity.)

On the other hand, in Norway (where practically everyone goes hiking and backpacking) fanny packs arer becoming increasingly popular - for short daytrips, and also, worn in front for easy access, in combination with rucksacks.

By the way, if you ever speak with British people, the term there is 'bumbag' - 'fanny' in the UK refers to - how to put without getting censored? - the female genitalia...
