Unfortunately I don't know any new technologies on the top of my head without doing some online research for you other then suggesting maybe visiting your local water corporations or surf their websites?
Any legit professional engineering consulting firms / investigators would be creditable with their recommendations and theories.
What I do know is, in Australia (nation-wide) we have very strict and law enforcing water restrictions during summers and the government are contemplating using recycled toilet / sewage water as drinking and everyday consumption. !!!
