Are the democrats going to continue pushing the fairness doctrine?
Democrats in the house and congress want to sensor talk radio and silence conservatives from giving their opinion. Should conservatives fight to keep talk radio? Or should they let the...

democrats bring back the fairness doctrine?
For me, I would rather continue fighting to keep conservatives on the radio instead of having them lose their careers. I'm not trying to prove anything, the democrats want to silence opposition.
Is that a good thing? Or bad?

Since the airwaves were seen as belonging to everyone there were rules that required broadcasters to act in the public's interest; one of these rules was the Fairness Doctrine. This said that when presenting a controversial point of view broadcasters were required to offer equal time to the opposing point of view. There is nothing to prevent talk radio, they would just have to present both sides.

Most Democrats do not want to bring back the fairness doctrine. A larger concern is to have media ownership laws that prevent a single entity from owning most of the media in an area. There used to be strict laws about how much media could be owned by a single entity in a particular market but these have been weakened in recent years.

Silencing the opposition is what was done in Soviet countries and would bode extremely bad for America - we all just have to wait and see what happens.

Censorship of political perspective is wrong. Censorship of blatant lies = perfectly fine. The trouble is, as we've seen on FunAdvice, you have lies by ommission that get shared all the time...and that's where you might see changes, which could be great, or could be bad.

Amblessed, if this is what you think the fairness doctrine did, you are sadly mistaken and misinformed. As usual.

We need something in place of the fairness doctrine. It was the demise of the fairness doctrine that led to the rise of truly biased media. We need to have some way to protect the integrity of the press, and when you let huge corporation control what is being said on supposed newscasts, the people are not getting the real story. At minimum we need to bring back the regulation that prevented companies from owning multiple outlets in the same market. Those regulations were struck down so Rupert Murdoch could build his media empire.
