Ok, when I was younger I got professional lessons. I did the recital thing and then I pretty much quit. I like to sing and play bass and the drums, but I guess I like the guitar too. Anyways, if you do not have the money for a professional, may I suggest to go to http://www.guitarcenter.com There are dvd/books that you can use to learn. They have all different levels too. A BIG tip for you though, start on acoustic, it will help you in the long run. And PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. You will suck in the beginning, but keep at it and you will be great. Trust me. Good luck. Hope I helped.

Just listen to songs with heavy guitar beats and try and imitate... then you download tabs to these songs and just keep playing, and playing, and playing. It works. That's how I got myself started and I've been nailing it pwetty well. The lessons will just give you skills, but practicing - especially in front of people you know; or even random people [if you're brave] gives you the experience and you start to learn tips like: finding out short cuts for the strings that you play etc. Metal is VERY good to learn from. Especially since it's complex and you develop an ear for the notes.

Just don't overdo it around people.

It p*sses them off.
