There is already a serious uprising underway in the Muslim Uighur region of western China. The Chinese government has tried for years to suppress it and has been dishonest about how widespread it is. Why people aren't upset about this is beyond me; maybe its because the people are Muslim.

I don't think Tibet will go that route. Tibet is not pushing for full independence, but rather a small measure of autonomy with the ability to preserve cultural identity and language. I think Tibet will continue to rally the international community to pressure Beijing, until they either consent and give Tibet what they're asking for, or crack down brutally and risk international outrage.

Keep in mind, Beijing is also always mindful of what happened to the Soviet Union during it's breakup. In order to prevent civil war, Russia had to allow several regions to become autonomous. China may realize it would be smart to do the same.

Tibet is tiny, I dont think it can go up against China...
And I doubt it will get enough support to be able to go to a full scale war...

California and Texas used to be separate republics that joined the US voluntarily. Tibet has as much chance of gaining independence as Texas and California have.

The republic was never recognized by Mexico or the US.

You are completely correct, however, the people who lived in California at the time (1848-1850) wanted to be a separate country. They did not want to become a US state. While this piece of information was inaccurate (for which I am sorry, I should have done more research), the overall premise stands, and, in fact, is strengthened by your input. The point is, China will never let loose of any of its provinces. Nor would the United States let loose of any of its states. Only chaos and horror would ensue.
