Yess People won’t go out of there way to help someone else thats how selfish the world iss!

No. People do make stupid mistakes yes. But at least younger and newer generations will always be able to learn from past generations mistakes. They will make mistakes themselves but, it will always be corrected by the next gen that comes along. Eventually we are bound to get it right.

Not true. Each generation gets worse with a lax generation before them. I see it in my classmates. Their parents were the kids of 70’s teenagers, and they’re allowed to do what they like. It isn’t giving good results. While we’re becoming better about things like rights for gay people and anti-racism, it’s not that they want to fight for something good and make the world better, it’s just that they don’t want to care. Environmentally, our world is definitely going downhill, because our generation, the one that’s supposed to be fixing it, couldn’t care less about the issue.

I think the world will always have people who are overly pessimistic, and people who actually work to make it better.

Can’t we be both? I dislike people and how they change for others; therefore I’m striving toward becoming a teacher to show the little ones that something better exists before anyone influences them too much and pulls them in a worse direction.

That seemed hypocritical there, but I’d like to believe you get what I mean.

Certainly I do :) My point is this: we live in a period in history where pandemic disease has been extinguished in many parts of the world. Despite tough economic times in some places, we enjoy unprecedented prosperity. There are things most of our ancestors had to endure that we never will. Because of this and more, I tend not to see the world as being little more than a “messed up” place. The world is full of problems and as the question suggests, it always will be. But too often, it seems there is a tendency to acknowledge this without acknowledging how much better our lives have become through the work of scientists, philanthropists, and others. I’m no foolish optimist, but as a student of history, I’m well aware than in almost any other time period, my life would likely have ended by now. Why only pessimism, without the appreciation and proper perspective to accompany it?

Who says the world is messed up? Things are better right now for a larger amount of people than at any time in history. For most of our history we’ve had the very rich and very poor. A lot of people now have unprecedented freedoms. I know people dont like to study history, but this is why it is important. To be able to put today’s world in context.

Each generation gets worse? And yet despite humanity apparently getting weaker we’ve got unprecedented technological advances, medical advances, and human rights advances which you oh so casually dismiss (you know, the reason you’re able to vote being a female and all is due to generations of women fighting). Sure the world isnt perfect. But I am curious what utopian age everyone seems to want to go back to. Exactly at what point was the world a better place?

We have technological advances, and medical advances, here, yes. In the US, and in the UK, across parts of Russia, but there are entire areas of the world, practically halves of hemispheres, that don’t even know these things exist. Now that we have the medical technology, we’re not using it to help the people that need it, we’re bringing it where we can gain profit from its use. Society is what is failing me and causing me to lose faith; it’s not the advances we make, but the people themselves. I’ll be able to vote when I get old enough, being female, yes, but guess how many women fought for the right, and guess how many women even care to use it today? I don’t want to go back to any age; the further you go back, yeah, we have less technology, more people were dying of sickness, but back then, people knew what sickness was, and they knew what suffering was, and when they weren’t suffering, they didn’t pretend they were. People knew how to be happy, how to be considerate and an actual community. It’s not what we have that’s getting worse, we have plenty. It’s what we are.

Funny, I’m always the example in class when the teachers say things along the lines of, “Guess who’d be the first to go!” And while I definitely see where you’re coming from, and I think you’re right, there have been much worse times, and there are things that I do appreciate, but when it comes to people, those that I admire are the ones that manage to resist the tendency of our generation to make bad decisions, knowing the consequences well, as well as put value in insignificant things while ignoring those that are important, and just, in general, providing no good influence in our community. There are very few of these people anywhere near me, and from being on the internet, I see that there are very, very many of the other kind of people. As I wrote down there \/ it’s not what the people have, it’s what they are.

Yes . as long as the people we elect,or on the take,and they all are everyone of them.
