Why is Lord spelled differently?

I was looking through my grandmothers King James Bible (she just passed away) and I noticed that in psalms 8:1 “Lord” is spelled two different ways. What is the reason for this?

Even Bibles have Typos. There’s a store in Branson, Missouri that sells them.

This is a translation marker. When the Bible was translated for the King James Version, the translators thought it best to remove God’s name from this version. When you see the word ‘LORD’ in all caps, it is a translation marker to where God’s name appeared in the original scrolls as ‘YHWH’, or as translated into English “Jehovah.”

If you turn to Exodus 6:3, you will see one of the only four places that God’s name is mentioned in the KJV Bible. The name is capitalized as ‘JEHOVAH’, following the rule of the translation markers.

A Good example of the confusion this can cause is at Psalm 110:1 which reads “The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

It’s hard to understand who is talking to who here, since two lord’s are mentioned. But if you remember the translation markers, you realize that it is God speaking to another ‘Lord’.

The same scripture according to the original scrolls would read this way “Jehovah saith unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”

Why this name was taken out, I am not sure of. I do know that God’s name appeared almost 7,000 times in the original scrolls from which all Bible translations are taken. As I mentioned before, the KJV Bible has reduced this number to only 4.

I don’t use the KJV for this very reason, because it is not accurate in that regard. When Jesus was on Earth he made God’s name known, why then should it be removed from our Bibles?

At John 17:26 he said in prayer “I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in union with them.”

And in the model prayer at Matthew 6:9 Jesus said that we should pray for God’s name to be hallowed. “Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.” “Hallowed” means to make holy or sacred or revered. How can we make that name something to be reverenced if we don’t know what it is?

As a Christian follower of Christ I too want to make God’s name known. I can’t do that with a Bible translation that has removed virtually all traces of that name.

I hope I answered your question. Feel free to funmail me if you have any questions. :]

Are you asking why ‘lord’ is in ALLCAPS one time, then not?

[O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.] - Psalms 8:1

As with Internet forums, words in allcaps are to be empasized vocally; enunciated, yelled, proclaimed, sung, etc.

As with Internet forums, words in allcaps are to be empasized vocally; enunciated, yelled, proclaimed, sung, etc.

Are you saying that the first “Lord” in this sentence, as well as every other time it is capitalized, is to be said with emphasis but not the second Lord in this sentence?

Answer #7

“O LORD (Jehovah) our Lord (master)…”

The first, “LORD”, is a name. The second, “Lord”, is a role.

As if I were to say, “ O johndeer our friend…”

Answer #8

…yep…

Since, I don’t think I’d ever call you ‘’The JOHNDEER’’

‘’The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.’’ [Psalm 34:18]
