What do you think about wholesale food prices having their biggest increase in 36 years?

From what I read in the news, wholesale food prices in the US had their biggest increase year over year in February….bigger than can be accounted for by a “bad winter” or other annual disasters or seasonal issues. In Egypt, the rising cost of food was associated with the growing discontent….

…when you start graphing the decreasing dollar value with the increasing distance between the wealth of the richest and poorest in our country…well, I think the rising food prices mean CEO’s of large companies should announce their taking home less pay and giving more to workers like Japan, where there is a 20% rule. OR do you think this food price increase is a non issue?

Answer #1

I think and would hope that it would inspire and motivate people to become more self sufficient and grow their own food and vegetables. Unfortunately though people have become so used to relying on corporations to provide for them, but I don’t think that that was your question? I don’t think it’s such a good issue and that it can be seen as good. I would hope that people would find other means of providing for themselves…..however I think I am being a little bit too optimistic.

Answer #2

I meant huge issue, not good issue. Pardon.

Answer #3

I buy all of my produce, cheese, and meat from a local farmer and farmer’s market, so i haven’t seen much increase. We don’t eat much by way of processed/packaged foods, but I have noticed coffee, sugar, and flour has gone up. It sucks.

Answer #4

It’s worrisome, especially with the economy being so bad. Whole/retail food prices are getting so high that eating healthily is becoming a challenge.

BTW, our local food pantry has seen a dramatic increase in hungry people. They’re having a hard time keeping up with the demand.
