what's going on with my son...?

my son is 13 monthes old. question is, what are the signs & symptoms of lactose intolerent. he has problems with gas. he’ll cry til he burps. usually around the same time he drinks milk. wic gives him whole milk. he also has acid reflux which he is on meds for that…he goes to the dr. this next wednesday anyways but just wanted some opinions from those who have had the same problems. and he is off formula also. any tips or advice would be great. =] thanxx!

My son is 7 months old and is pretty severely lactose intolerant, to the point that if I have any dairy, and nurse him, he’ll have excruciating tummy pains. His abdomen gets rock hard, he becomes constipated, followed by diarrhea… If given formula with lactose in it he will vomit some up and will have tummy pains, etc. Some babies break out in a rash. What you can do is purchase a lactose-free, dairy based formula for older babies or try a soy based formula for older babies. They make it for toddlers and is often called “Next Step” or “Second Stage”. WIC has terrible nutrition. It is appalling that they expect you to be able to feed your child nutritious food with the crap they allow. You can request a dairy-free adjusted plan; I did. You wont get cheese, but you can get Lactaid. Check with your child’s pediatrician to see if he could have whole-fat Lactaid (lactose free milk). This is a rotten problem to have. :o( I hope your little one feels better soon. Luckily I knew from week 2 that my son was lactose intolerant. If he’s been diagnosed with acid reflux, he may have ALWAYS been lactose intolerant and his body was just trying to rid itself of the dairy in the milk you were feeding him… that’s something you could bring up to his pediatrician. Try removing ALL dairy (cheese, yogurt, milk, ice-cream, creamy sauces, etc…) and see if he improves. It’ll probably take about 3 days for it to start working itself out of his system completely. Good luck. I really do hope he feels better and that you’re able to have some peace of mind.

thanx your advice was wonderful kdsmm. he’s had acid reflux sense he was born. it runs in my family. I tried giving him skim milk instead of whole milk yesterday and he’s doing a lil bit better plus I been giving him the gas relief stuff from walmart. thats helping sum too. I think I will mention this to his dr. it seemed like even when he was on formula it took monthes of hospitalization and switching formulas around cause he was always power puking everything up. and so far they only found out that he has acid reflux. which has gotten a lot better sense about 7-8 monthes old I think it was.

Don’t all babies get wind after having a bottle?
