What is "the calling"?

I was in Angell Job Corps about a year and a half ago. There was an Army recruiting officer called Sgt. Baker, and He apparently saw something in me that I haven’t heard of.

So I took the asvab test and scored a 68 if I remember correctly, and my physical exam (mandatory on entry in JC) showed that I was fit as any human could get, with no diseases and my only defect actually helps me.

So this Sergeant Baker decides that I have something mysterious and rare called “the calling”, and tells me about it in some private meeting, interrupting my normal curricular pursuits. Yet never had the time or decency to tell me what it is or what it means…and what I should do about it.

So tell me please, what is the calling, and what are my responsibilities in regard to such an aspect? Or is it something the recruiters tell the “smart” ones to make them think they belong in the military? What is the average asvab test score, and does a 68 “indicate” that I have this “calling”?

These questions have troubled me for months now.

Sounds like you’re a special guy. The recruiter’s only goal in talking to you is getting you to join the military.

That can be a good move for some people. You should explore all your options and decide what makes sense to you.

But don’t let anyone else tell you that you weren’t MEANT to be in the military. If that was true you would know it from within.
