What is the answer to this algebra maths question??

Sorry asked a question like this before but realised I’d typed in the wrong thing. So the actual question is:

5x +1 = 2x -8

How can this be worked out and what is the answer?

Answer #1

I had forgotten how much I loved algebra!

Answer #2

you might wanna check out the steps in doing so. similar as this: http://www.funadvice.com/q/extended_algebra_how_do_u_do_it

5x +1 = 2x -8 5x - 2x = -8 + -1 3x = -9 x=-3

Answer #3

5x + 1 = 2x - 8

 +8          +8

5x+9 = 2x -5x -5x

   9 = -3x

here you divide 9 by -3 and you get

since the thing doesnt show how I wrote it you subtract/add/divide/multiply, something from both sides and it has to be like terms.

 x = -3
