Sad but I don't think I'm depressed

okie heres the deal… im really sad but I dont think im depressed well I dont really think I need counseling just want someone to talk to, someone who will pay attention and actually care well I the other day I asked my mother if I could have counseling she said no and I was like “Why not?” she said, “Because I cant think of any bad things in your life, you have friends, a good family, get treated good, etc”

yes that is true for the most part, however thats not the stuff thats is making me sad, I have been sad for quite a while now, dont even feel like getting up, going outside, or sometimes not even eating talking to my mother is like talking to a brick wall she nods her head, then out of no where talk about random things like how nice it would be to see a dolphin! and then the next day its like nothing ever happened or like today the next 20 minutes she was acting as if nothing has happened but I just cant talk to her and well I dont really want too to talk to her, to be honest theres no point in it.. but what do I do I really want counseling?

You say that you want a person whom you can talk to and listen, care, & understand without judging you. A counselor can provide you that. He will listen to you expressing your problems and the things you feel. A counselor is qualified to do that, and he can give you real, qualified answers as to what might be troubling you. You can speak to your school counselor about it. If he does think you have depression or any other problem that needs to be taken care of, he can refer you to other health professionals, and inform your mother about it so that she will treat it seriously.

Sometimes, if you just need someone to talk to, you can always turn to a relative, or an adult you know well like your neighbor. You can also talk about it with your priest or teacher who will lend you an ear. But, counselors will be able to see if you really are depressed or not.

Your mother probably doesn’t (want to) believe that you can be depressed. She wants you to have all the happiness in the world, so when you say that you feel depressed, she is probably in denial about it. You can’t really blame her, parents try really hard to care for their kids, and if something goes wrong, they find it hard to believe because they will probably accept the blame even if it’s not their fault.

You are at an age where hormones, emotions and even your brain are undergoing strong changes. It is natural to occasionally feel confused or depressed.

The best thing you can do is to talk to a counselor or therapist. Barring that, find someone you can communicate your emotions and thoughts with, sort of like a sounding board. Keeping your thoughts to yourself doesn’t help. If you can’t find someone around you then consider Fun Mailing someone on Fun Advice whose advice you like. It’s relatively private and gives you a good sounding board.

Fun Mail a “sounding board”!

I would assume that you can’t talk about what you are going through with anyone because it is too personal and you don’t want others to know about it in relation to you.

The solution, then, might be to pick someone on Fun Advice whose advice you like and Fun Mail them. (You can check out the quality of someone’s advice by clicking on their name; going down to their recent advice, click on view all, then click on the questions that might interest you and view their answers.) Explain to them that you are having problems and want to have someone to use as a “sounding board” and would like to know if they would be willing to be your sounding board. Fun Mail is basically private, so you shouldn’t have any concerns about your privacy.

Although there are many users on Fun Advice who would be qualified, I’d suggest the person be an Advisor, for two reasons: First, most Advisors have several hundred or even thousands of Answers under their belt which can really give you a perspective about them; and second, you can simply click on the Advisors link at the top of the page and view a list of the most recently active Advisors with information about them AND a total of their Answers. (Don’t contact them by that “Ask me a question” link. That’s public. Instead, click on their name which will take you to their Profile page, then click on the “Send me Fun Mail” link on the left side of the page.)

You also have the ability to Fun Mail anyone (Advisor or otherwise) by clicking on the “Send me Fun Mail” link near the top of the Answer under the person’s name.

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,         And maybe lessen the cares in your way;         And also, too, to help you to know,         That in knowing you, many others grow!

Depression is about having something to be depressed about… it’s not like only people with huge tragedies in their lives are depressed. It’s an illness. Maybe you should talk to her more about what exactly depression is… And if you self harm you definitely need someone to talk to.

Answer #5

don’t self harm just because you’ll definetely need to talk to someon e if you do though.
