The end of the world?

Sorry for posting about this, because it can be rather annoying with the amount of questions on it, but yes.

In an RE lesson today, we got talking about the end of the world, and said that we should find out the opinions of others for the next lesson, so as there is such a large community of people on funadvice, it would be a good starting point asking here.

My teacher told us about how it is predicted the world will end on 21/12/12.

Does anyone else think that this is ridiculous? From what I know, this is predicted because the Mayan calendar stops then. How can this possibly mean the end of the world? Plus, the fact that all numbers are either one or two (excluding the 20 in 2000), seems a bit…I don’t know, just not right.

I’ve read stuff about the bible code, and according to that it should have already ended. The world was said to end on 06/06/06, and it didn’t.

Thank you. I just want opinions on this, and whether you believe it or not.

The positive outcome to the prediction could be related to recent discoveries of Amazonian Dark Earth called Terra Preta, or “black earth.” Char was used successfully to create anthropogenic soils, which allowed a civilization equal to the Mayas, Incas and Egyptians to thrive in the tropical soils. It was the secret of El Dorado - a black gold. The soil seems to recreate itself when excavated.

It may be quite possible for us to survive a peak oil Armageddon with this practice of soil preservation spread globally. Making “biochar” results in carbon negative energy and fertilizer. Putting carbon back in soils is the best way to sequester carbon for centuries and reverse global warming. Agricultural and forestry outputs could triple, while preserving soil. With the ride on oil having taken us the Moon and back, the knowledge gained can take us to Eden here at home.

The Mayans surely would have known about the value Terra Preta. The future may be bleak for the excesses of Las Vegas, but not necessarily so for those that love green more than gold.

Dear cupcakes999, I am not a historian, (yet) and am still in school, but the Maya is honestly one of my favorite subjects. I first saw a show about the history channel, and then I did a giant report on them for school. I then continued to study them on my own. I have literately viewed over 1000 sources pertaining to them, and hours of research. People shouldn’t be posting about this unless they know why this is probably the best known doomsday date. On December 21, 2012 some the rarest astronomical events are happening. The center of the milky way will align exactly with the sun which will align exactly with the earth. This only happens every 25,800 years. (you may see people rounding this and saying 26,000 years to make it easier to remember) At the same time, many other events will be happening, including: The earth being at a certain point on it’s axis, happening every 26,000 or so years. The sun being at it’s most dangerous solar activity in 12 or so years And, after 2012, one of the biggest events in the history of earth will be happening. The earth will be in the very center of the milky way. Usually the earth rests more toward the top, but after December 21, 2012, the earth will begin to move down toward the bottom of the milky way for the first time in…well for the first time ever.

The Maya calendar ends on this date, and the Maya were expert astronomers. Coincidence? I think not. The Maya living in around 3000 B.C. and reaching their collapse during the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 1500’s were able to calculate these. The Maya were known to have viewed this as a new age, and are often believed to have viewed this as the end of the world. On the last page of the Dresden Codex, is where much of this came from, with some glyphs at the top half of which are destroyed, and constant pictures of flooding upon the earth. The glyphs that are left refer to black earth.

It’s because of this and the Maya’s impressive ability to predict the future that this date is often known. Whether or not the world will END is up to debate; but we do know that the Maya predicted that SOMETHING will happen on that day.

Note: Because there is some debate as to what exact day the calendar began in 3114 B.C., some people say that the Maya calendar ends on December 22, or 23

heck,My Calander ends December of 2008. Does that mean the world is going to end then? No.

I think theres way too much hype about the whole Mayan Calendar thing. I agree with what everyone else said though. No one really knows for sure.

Answer #4

21/12/12 represents the end of the current astrological age as predicted by the Mayans. It has nothing to do with the end of the world.

Answer #5

I think there is way to much talk about the world’s end. Nobody knows for sure and when it is brought up, it turns into an argument. Just like when everybody saved up all their food, water and supplies for Y2K. If that were to be the end of the world, then why save all that stuff? Like it’s going to do you any good if you’re dead!!! So ya, there was Y2K, 6/6/06 and now 12/12/12 that’s supposedly the end? Whatever. Why not 8/8/08 or 9/9/09 and so on. Just because a calender ends doesn’t mean the world is going to be gone. The world was here before the invention of calenders and I am sure it can survive without them.

Answer #6

I agree. It’s ridiculous to think that the world will end when the Mayan calendar stops. It’s equally ridiculous to think that anyone can predict the exact day or time. I figure when the end comes, it will be a shock to everyone.

Answer #7

Thanks for everyones opinions.

I myself think it’s utter trash. I don’t understand how the end of a calendar has anything at all to do with the end of the world.

Answer #8

yea’, I heard bout it as well, and no I dont believe it bein the endof the world why b/c the Bible plainly says that man doesn know when and even Jesus Christ doesn know only God knows, so nope I dont believe it, and I agree with allyoxo, I think its just somethin to get people to start talking and scare people.

Answer #9
